Counselor (SSP-AR part-time)

California State University Fullerton is seeking applications for a professional counselor position in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) working with enrolled students who are emancipated from the foster care system. Under the general supervision of the Director, the selected candidate will provide (75%) individual and (15%) group counseling to students who participate in the Guardian Scholars program. This individual will also participate in (7%) Guardian Scholar Program events, develop and lead workshops and programs as well as (3%) other duties as assigned. This position is a 10 to 19 hour per week clinical position, renewable up to three years and with the possibility of expanding hours. Successful candidates will be licensed in psychology, social work or marriage and family therapy with expertise in addressing a wide range of developmental and psychological needs of a diverse and specialized student population. Position
Direct Counseling Services: Provide intake clinical interviews, short-term individual and couples counseling, group counseling and psycho-educational groups, crisis intervention, case management and collaboration with a consulting psychiatrist, and referrals to and consultation with academic and disability counselors and health center professionals on-campus as well as off-campus mental health professionals and agencies.

Program Development: Attend Guardian Scholar Program events to develop a sense of community and reduce the stigma about mental health services. Develop and provide outreach programs, including occasional evening or weekend programs, for a specialized, diverse and underrepresented student population. Participate in the development and implementation of assigned special projects.

Required Qualifications
Education/License

  • Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or Masters degree in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy from an accredited program.
  • California license to practice in candidate's field of specialization.

Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct intake clinical interviews, including psycho-diagnostic assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment plan formulation, for students with a broad spectrum of psychological problems, ranging from adjustment issues to major psychiatric disorders.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide individual, couples and group counseling, and crisis intervention for psychological emergencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and ability to work with students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, ranging in age from 17 to 25.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with adolescents/young adults with complex psychological issues (e.g., trauma histories, dual diagnoses).
  • Demonstrated autonomy, effectiveness and sensitivity in clinical work.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement outreach programs and provide consultation services.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent ability to work as a member of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.

Desired Qualifications

  • Comprehensive understanding of issues affecting students from the foster care system.
  • Expertise in issues pertinent to a university student population (e.g., eating disorders; cross cultural aspects of trauma and domestic violence; substance abuse; identity issues).
  • Bilingual/multilingual capacity.

Rank & Salary
In the CSU system, this position is classified as a Student Services Professional - Academic-Related Level II. Counselors in the CSU system serve as members of the academic faculty unit and are represented by the faculty union. This is a 12 month part-time temporary position which may be renewed up to two additional years. Salary is competitive and is based on credentials and experience.
