Counselor (Psychologist)
Tenure Track
California State University Fullerton is seeking applications for
a career level tenure-track counselor (psychologist) faculty position
in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Under the general
supervision of the Director, the selected candidate will provide
a full range of clinical services and clinical supervision of graduate
trainees (65%) and participate in campus outreach and other projects,
maintain professional and scholarly activities and service to the
department, student affairs division and university community (35%).
While this appointment has faculty status for collective bargaining
purposes, it is a full-time, 12 months clinical position with limited
teaching or research responsibilities. Successful candidates will
have a doctoral degree in psychology, be currently licensed or license-eligible,
and have expertise in addressing a wide range of developmental and
psychological needs of a diverse college student population.
Position
Direct Counseling Services: provide intake clinical interviews
and psycho-diagnostic assessments, short-term individual and couples
counseling, group counseling and psycho-educational groups, clinical
triage and crisis intervention, case management and collaboration
with a consulting psychiatrist, and referrals to and consultation
with academic and disability counselors and health center professionals
on-campus as well as off-campus mental health professionals and
agencies.
Outreach Services: develop and provide outreach programs
(e.g., classroom presentations; workshops), including occasional
evening or weekend programs, for a metropolitan, largely commuter
campus with a highly diverse student population; participate in
the development and implementation of assigned special outreach
projects (e.g., mental health screening days; prevention projects).
Consultation: provide expertise to the university community
regarding issues that affect the educational, developmental and
psychological well-being of students; provide consultation services
and occasional in-service training to faculty, administrators, and
student leaders on mental health and developmental issues.
Supervision and Training: provide clinical supervision to
counseling trainees (practicum students, pre-doctoral interns, psychology
post-doctoral fellows); co-facilitate outreach programs and groups
with all levels of supervisees; provide periodic training and educational
seminars for all levels of supervisees.
Required Qualifications
Education/License:
- Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an accredited
program.
- California license to practice psychology or license eligibility
(completion of post-doctoral supervised clinical hours required
for licensure).
Experience and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to conduct intake clinical interviews,
including psycho-diagnostic assessment, case conceptualization,
and treatment plan formulation, for students with a broad spectrum
of psychological problems, ranging from adjustment issues to major
psychiatric disorders.
- Demonstrated ability to provide short-term individual, couples
and group counseling, and crisis intervention for psychological
emergencies.
- Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and ability to work with
students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds,
ranging in age.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement outreach programs
and provide consultation and preventive education.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a treatment
team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer skills for electronic record keeping.
- Must successful pass a background check and pre-employment fingerprinting.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience and interest in providing outreach services and counseling
to traditionally underserved student populations (e.g., male students;
students from ethnic minorities such as Asian, South Asian, African-American,
Latino, etc.).
- Bilingual/multilingual capacity in languages relevant to the
cultural heritage of Fullerton students (e.g., Spanish, Vietnamese,
Mandarin).
- Experience in a university counseling center working with issues
pertinent to a diverse student population (e.g., cross cultural
aspects of trauma and domestic violence, substance abuse and eating
disorders; identity issues).
- Clinical skills in working with high risk clients.
- Supervisory experience.
Rank & Salary
In the CSU system, this position is classified as a Student Service
Professional - Academically Related Level I - tenure track. This
is a full time 12 month position. Counselors in the CSU system serve
as members of the academic faculty unit and are represented by the
faculty union. Counselor faculty earn full tenure generally through
a six year tenure process. Salary is competitive and is commensurate
with experience and qualifications. The University offers excellent,
