Systems Librarian

Position
Cal State Fullerton Pollak Library seeks an exceptional candidate for the position of Systems Librarian. Working with staff and librarians, the Systems Librarian is involved with the analysis, design, development, administration, support, and ongoing maintenance of library technologies at Cal State Fullerton.
Responsibilities
Reports to the Head of Systems and participates as a member of the Library Systems Steering Group. Manages library technologies, including hardware, software and specialized library applications, such as the public website and intranet, authentication and security systems, integrated library system (ILS), and various licensed products. Assists with installation, configuration, and modification of applications, networks, databases, and other systems. Provides user support and performs assessments, research, and troubleshooting to resolve user issues.
Provides leadership in the design and implementation of new solutions and enhancements to existing technology and processes, working when feasible with promising open source solutions. Uses project management techniques and documentation to ensure that projects are focused on approved, highest priority tasks and functions. Assists library staff to plan, revise, and update the library website in accordance with usability studies, campus and 508 standards, and library needs. Collaborates and coordinates with the Fullerton campus Information Technology division and the Systemwide Library Initiatives staff at the CSU Chancellor’s Office. Maintains currency in all aspects of information technology relevant to the library environment by reading relevant print & online resources and attending selected conferences and workshops. Interacts effectively with librarians, staff, managers, vendors, and others to understand and address problems from a broad, interactive perspective.
Qualifications
Requirements include:
- Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent institution by the time of appointment.
- Demonstrated ability to formally manage projects ensuring the best use of library staff and budgetary resources.
- Demonstrated application development experience with one or more open source programming languages and facility with Unix/Linux server environment.
- Ability to analyze, implement and promote evolving technologies
- Excellent customer service skills. Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects
- Ability and willingness to work in a team environment
- Ability to interact effectively in a multi-cultural environment within and outside the Library.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an academic library environment.
- Experience with SFX, or other link resolver; Metalib, or other federated search engine; ILLiad; EZProxy; LDAP, Shibboleth or other authentication systems; Verde or other electronic resource management system, and integrated library systems.
Rank & Salary
Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Librarian. Salary range will be $47,460-$64,140, commensurate with rank, experience, and qualifications. The appointment will be for the period of March 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010, with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon availability of funds. The Library
The Library’s Web site (http://www.library.fullerton.edu) is a vital component of the Library’s extensive instruction program and serves as a gateway to resources. The Library contains 1.2 million books, government documents, and audiovisual materials; over 20,000 periodicals available electronically or in print; and over 200 electronic databases. The Library uses the Innovative Interfaces integrated library system, SFX, and Metalib. The staff includes 26 FTE librarians and 37 FTE paraprofessionals.
