Part-time Pool
The department invites applications for its Part-Time Faculty pool for possible teaching beginning with the Spring 2010
to Spring 2011 semester.
The Department of Psychology plays a major role in contributing to the general education experiences of students in humanities and the social sciences while also serving more than 1600 majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Most courses are three-units per semester, typically offered in a lecture-discussion mode, but some are laboratory courses. Qualifications
Candidates must have at least a Master's degree in a field relevant to the curriculum of the Department of Psychology. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching. An ability to work effectively with a broad mix of student ages and students from culturally diverse backgrounds is also highly desirable. A Ph.D. or extensive professional experience is desirable for teaching upper-division courses (300- or 400-level) and required for 500-level graduate courses.
Appointment Date and Academic Calendar
The fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the spring term runs from the beginning of February through the end of May. On rare occasions part-time faculty are needed during one of the Summer Session segments.
Appointment and Salary
All part-time faculty appointments are made as Lecturers, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the California State University system and the California Faculty Association. Initial appointments are for one semester only. Salaries vary depending upon qualifications and experience. Typical starting salaries for part-time faculty range from $4147 to approximately $4533 for a three-unit class; additional compensation is awarded for instruction in large lecture classes. Personnel Reviews
Regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department or program according to the terms of the adopted University Policy Statement (UPS 210.060). Positive reviews are based upon student ratings of instruction, course materials, and in-class observations made by a full-time faculty member or the department chairperson. The primary service responsibility of part-time faculty is to provide opportunities for student consultation outside of the regular class hours (i.e, office hours); on-line discussion periods or e-mail contacts shall not be a complete substitute for face-to-face consultation periods.
