Multiple Specializations
Three Tenure-Track Positions

The Department of Sociology at California State University, Fullerton, invites candidates to apply for three tenure-track positions to begin with the Fall 2008 semester. CSU Fullerton enrolls more than 35,000 students and is currently ranked 8th nationally in the number of bachelor's degrees it grants to members of underrepresented groups. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest and most diverse academic division within the University, offers more than 40 different bachelor and master degrees. The Department of Sociology offers both a BA and an MA degree in Sociology and is a major collaborator in an interdisciplinary MS in Gerontology. The Department includes undergraduate areas of concentration, an emphasis on service learning and internship experiences, a minor; and at the graduate level both applied social research and community college teaching focuses. Positions
The Department is seeking to hire three new Assistant Professors with primary strengths in one of the following three areas: Quantitative Methods, Social Theory, and Environmental Sociology, in combination with any of the following specialties; Sociology of Aging, Sociology of Families, Work and Occupations, Economic Sociology and Social Work. The Department especially encourages applicants who bring ethnically diverse perspectives to their understanding of these primary and secondary specialties. Faculty teach upper/lower division and graduate courses, provide academic advisement, participate in department/University service, and engage in scholarly endeavors resulting in peer-reviewed publications. Positive tenure/promotion decisions require excellent teaching, peer-reviewed publications, and service to the department and University.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Sociology or a relevant field by August 2008 is required. ABD applicants are to provide supporting documentation of the likelihood of completion before the beginning of classes for the Fall 2008 semester (i.e. letters from advisors, indication of oral defense date, sample dissertation chapters, etc.).
  • Evidence of successful teaching. Please provide copies of student evaluations with interpretive information.
  • A realistic research agenda and evidence of on-going involvement in research activity.
  • Use of best practices and innovative instructional technologies in teaching.
  • Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse range of students and faculty.

Rank and Salary
The positions are at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track, with a highly competitive salary commensurate with rank, experience, and qualifications and subject to any California State University System faculty contract increases. Additional teaching in summer and intersession is often available.
