Comparative Literature
Tenure-Track
The Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics
at California State University, Fullerton is seeking highly energetic
faculty who desire a career that balances excellent teaching with
outstanding scholarship and community service. CSU, Fullerton, one
of the largest campuses in the 23-campus CSU system, is an urban
university serving over 35,000 students. The College of Humanities
and Social Sciences, the largest and most diverse academic division
within the University, includes 20 departments and interdisciplinary
programs and 11 research centers, and offers more than 40 different
bachelor's and master's degrees. The Department, which serves approximately
600 majors, offers BAs and MAs in English and Linguistics, and BA's
in Comparative Literature.
Position
We invite applications for an Assistant Professor position specializing
in comparative literature in translation, with a focus on South
Asian, Middle Eastern, or South American literature. Teaching will
include specialty courses at the upper-division and MA levels, introductory
surveys, general education courses, composition, and other courses
depending on the candidate's interests and departmental needs. Department
faculty normally teach four courses each semester. Re-assigned time
is available for research, course development, and departmental
responsibilities. A reduction in teaching load is provided for the
first two years and may be extended in subsequent years. Each faculty
member advises undergraduate students and serves on faculty committees.
Teaching opportunities exist during summer and a January intersession.
Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching
as well as research, peer-reviewed publication, and participation
in the broader disciplinary community.
Qualifications
- A PhD in English or Comparative Literature with training and
experience in comparative literature is required by August 2008.
ABD's will be considered but must show evidence of degree completion
prior to appointment.
- Although not required, secondary teaching specializations in
one of the following areas is desirable: applied linguistics /
the structure of modern English, literary theory (especially pre-20th
Century), the Bible as literature, classical mythology, children's
literature, and the novel.
- Evidence of successful teaching and potential for successful
research and publications is essential.
- Candidates should be familiar with recognized best practices
in teaching and have an interest in using and developing innovative
instructional technologies to promote student learning.
- Successful candidates will be able to interact effectively with
a wide and culturally diverse range of students and colleagues.
Rank and Salary
The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track.
Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with experience and
qualifications. Salary is subject to budgetary authorization and
any California State University System faculty contract increases.
